Recent verscheen een bijzonder boek voor de Leids Joodse geschiedenis. Jaap W. Focke deed jarenlang onderzoek en schreef een (Engelstalig) boek over het voormalig Joods Weeshuis Machseh Lajesoumim aan de Roodenburgerstraat. Een indrukwekkend boek met het verhaal van het Weeshuis maar ook diverse verhalen van bewoners die een deel van hun leven in dit weeshuis hebben gewoond. Juist door die persoonlijke geschiedenissen wordt het geheel nog indrukwekkender. De verhalen worden verteld in de context van de jaren voor en tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Het boek bevat veel bronvermeldingen, mooie foto’s en een goede index.
Een kostbaar monument voor een historie die nog steeds verteld moet worden.

Recently a special book for Leiden Jewish history was published. Jaap W. Focke did years of research and wrote a book about the former Jewish Orphanage Machseh Lajesoumim at the Roodenburgerstraat. An impressive book with the story of the orphanage but also several stories of residents who lived in this orphanage for part of their lives. These personal histories make the book even more impressive. The stories are told in the context of the years before and during the Second World War. The book contains many source citations, beautiful photographs and a good index.
A precious monument to a history that still needs to be told.
